UND Football Adjusting To Life In Utah

The UND football team will wrap up its Big Sky Conference road schedule today with a 7 p.m. kickoff against Southern Utah in Cedar City.

We flew in to Utah early Friday evening. On the plane, I sat by the 5-year-old kid who won the video contest (QUICK REFRESHER: He had two broken arms at the time, UND players took him into postgame locker room to celebrate win over Northern Colorado) a few weeks back to win a trip with the team. He and I played Connect 4 on his Ipad. It was cool.

We’re staying in Brian Head, Utah, at a ski resort. We’re the only ones here because it’s not ski season, so the team is renting out this beautiful lodge.

The views are incredible. You have to take a winding, crazy road 40 minutes from Cedar City to get here, but I’d say it’s worth it.

The only downside to our setup has been the elevation adjustment. Cedar City sits at 5,800 feet and Brian Head at 9,800. Maybe not shockingly for a bunch of flat-landers, I think quite a few of us are having a difficult time with that transition.

The temperature swing from Cedar City to Brian Head is pretty dramatic, too. It’s about 35 degrees this morning this high up and probably 20 degrees warmer in Cedar City. It’s windy, too. The air has a real North Dakota feel.

UND’s travel roster seemed about what we’ve come to expect. I don’t envision too many surprises today. I believe Tank Harris will be back at nose guard after missing last week’s game against Portland State. Offensive lineman A.J. Stockwell also made the trip after not traveling to Portland State.

Don’t forget, UND safety Chuck Flowers has to miss the first half as he was called for a targeting penalty in the final minute against Portland State last week. That means a lot of redshirt freshman Jordan Canady and true freshman Ty Shannon.
